In a car bomb attack, several people have died in western Iraq. The attack was a joint checkpoint of the Iraqi army and Shiite militias.

An assassin had killed at least seven people in the border town of Al-Kaim, the Iraqi army said. Four victims were therefore security forces, three were civilians. Four people were injured and the perpetrator also died.

The terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) claimed its mouthpiece Amak to the attack. The Sunni extremist group, which had controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria for several years before being pushed back in both countries, is still active in the sparsely populated border region. Especially in the Euphrates valley around Al-Kaim and in adjacent desert areas, the IS militia has retreat areas, from where it repeatedly carries out attacks on security forces.

Police circles even reported 21 deaths, most of them militia fighters. There was initially no official confirmation.
