The Arab League strongly condemned the announcement by the Australian Prime Minister to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, stressing that this constitutes a serious violation of the international legal status of the city of Jerusalem and the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy and the Security Council.

The Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Arab Lands at the Arab League Ambassador Said Abu Ali said in a statement on Saturday that the resolution represents a blatant defiance of the policies and policies of the Israeli occupation and encouragement of its practices and aggression, especially in recent times. His rights are in disregard of international law and legitimacy and the will of the international community in frantic attempts aimed at destroying any chance of achieving peace in a two-state solution that reflects the will of the international community.

Ambassador Abu Ali added that this irresponsible Australian decision will have the repercussions of doubling the causes and factors of destroying the prospects for peace and encouraging the occupation to continue its aggression, arrogance, settlement and defiance of international resolutions and will to pre-empt the requirements of achieving a just and comprehensive peace by ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with its capital East Jerusalem.

The Assistant Secretary-General said that the decision would be followed by serious follow-up by the Arab League and would have an impact on the overall Arab-Australian relations.
