Three men have been executed in Egypt for the murder of the Egyptian Attorney General three and a half years ago. According to the judiciary, they were among a group of 28 suspects who were sentenced to death in 2017 for the assassination attempt on Hisham Barakat.

The human rights organization Amnesty International had vainly requested that the executions be suspended. It is not fair to execute people on the basis of torture-enforced confessions, Amnesty said. According to the organization, six more men had been executed after unfair trials this month.

Human rights organizations have long lamented the state's repression under Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who is cracking down on Islamists and government critics.
