The Geneva Council on Rights and Justice held the UAE fully responsible for any repercussions on the health of detainees who have been on hunger strike for about 15 days in an Abu Dhabi prison in Aden, southern Yemen.

New photographs of detainees held in the prison of Bir Ahmed, supervised by the UAE, showed signs of continuing hunger strikes in order to meet their demands.

In a press statement, the Geneva Council for Justice and Human Rights called for a halt to what it described as the horrific violations of Yemeni detainees in prisons supervised by the UAE in various parts of Yemen, especially in the prison of Bir Ahmed.

"The crimes of torture and sexual extortion have become systematic behavior against hundreds of detainees in prisons directly supervised by the UAE, or through armed groups supported by Abu Dhabi," Human Rights Watch said.

Data and certificates
According to statements and testimonies gathered by the Geneva Council, the detainees at Bir Ahmed prison have been on hunger strike for about 15 days, while being held without a decision on their detention or fair trial.

According to the testimonies, the number of fainting among the detainees reached 18 due to the strike, at a time when the Yemeni criminal prosecution is responsible for their lives because it did not fulfill its duty towards them.

Prisoners who were on hunger strike sewed their mouths to protest against what they were exposed to, according to the images on social networking sites.

The families of the detainees in Aden province have claimed the legitimate authorities and the Saudi-UAE coalition forces "full responsibility for the persecution and torture of their relatives in the custody of the coalition forces in Aden."

Secret detention centers
A secret report was obtained by the island in August, prepared by figures working with the Saudi-UAE alliance, and reveals the conditions of prisons and secret prisons and forced hiding in Yemen.

The report also corroborated the findings of an investigation by the Associated Press of the United States, which revealed the existence of a network of secret prisons in Yemen run by the UAE, and detainees are subjected to various types of torture.

In the same context, a report of the Panel of Experts of the Security Council Committee on Yemen, which is formed by the Security Council in the summer of 2017, concluded that serious violations were committed by the Yemeni and coalition countries, some of which may amount to war crimes such as extrajudicial detention, without trial, enforced disappearance and others.

In September, the UN Human Rights Council extended the mission of the International Commission of Experts to investigate violations in Yemen for a year, despite strong opposition from Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
