A polar bear girl could become the new favorite of zoo visitors in Berlin. At the first examination, veterinarians ascertained the gender of the offspring, as zoo and zoo director Andreas Knieriem said after visiting the stable. "It's a strong girl."

The cub, born at the beginning of December, weighs about eight and a half kilograms, with a height of just over 60 centimeters, according to Knieriem. "We have seen that everything is alright."

A veterinarian said that despite all the routine in his job, the visit to the little one was "a highlight" for him. "If you let the heart speak, then you have to say that these polar bear babies are just cute."

Offspring: polar bear girl in the Berlin zoo

Already in the beginning or in the middle of March, Eisgrave mother Tonja and the still nameless little one could be seen on the grounds in the Tierpark in Friedrichsfelde, said Knieriem - if everything goes well. The globular figure of the juvenile is a cause for joy. Temporary power gathering is also important in nature, so that the offspring of the mother can safely and quickly follow when leaving the litter cave in the spring.

For the expiry of the name search for the little keeps the zoo still covered. One reason for the restraint may be that, according to Knieriem, there is still a residual risk. In recent years, Tonjas young had not survived.

In 2017 Eisbär Fritz died at the age of four months surprisingly as a result of liver disease, the cause of which according to Tierpark is still completely unclear. In January 2018, another polar bear died, which Tonja had given birth to. It was only 26 days old.

The polar bears' mortality is very high in nature as they are very immature. In the beginning they are only as big as guinea pigs, besides blind and deaf.
