At least 49 people died in a major fire in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka. In addition, 41 people were taken to hospital injured, said the Director General of Fire and Civil Protection, Ali Ahmed. Around 200 helpers work at the site of the accident to search for more victims.

The fire broke out on Wednesday evening on the ground floor of a four-storey building in the old town, it was said by the fire department. It quickly spread to three neighboring houses. "There was a traffic jam at the time of the fire," Ahmed said. "That's why people could not escape." The roads in the area are very narrow.

According to local media reports, chemical products were stored in the building. The newspaper "Dhaka Tribune" reported that the fire is now under control. Because of the chemicals and plastic products, the flames spread very quickly. About the cause of the fire, there is no official information.
