An avalanche has buried a 16-year-old in St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria. The teenager was recovered after 20 minutes, but could not be resuscitated, said a police spokesman.

The German-Australian had been with his parents and his brother apparently off the slopes and in the late afternoon in very steep terrain did not get ahead, it said. The teenager then dropped off an emergency call. While the rescuers were traveling to recover the family, the avalanche hit him.

The father was German, the mother Australian. The family lives in Australia. According to the police spokesman, she was traveling without emergency equipment such as a shovel or avalanche search device.

On Wednesday, six students from Saxony-Anhalt were hit by an avalanche and partly buried in the Austrian ski resort Wildkogel. They could all save each other. Due to massive snowfalls, the highest avalanche warning level applies in parts of Austria.
