The BVB assassin Sergei W. accepted now but the verdict of the Dortmund jury. His defender Carl Heydenreich said on Wednesday that he had withdrawn the appeal against the verdict. W. was convicted in the trial of the bombing of the team of the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund for attempted murder to a prison sentence of 14 years.

The Dortmund district court found Sergei W. guilty in November 2018 of a 28-fold attempt to assassinate and cause an explosion of explosives. The presiding judge Peter Windgätter remained below the petition of the prosecutor who had demanded life imprisonment. The defense had initially pleaded for a punishment of well under ten years.

W. had confessed to firing three shell bombs on April 11, 2017 in front of the team bus of Borussia Dortmund. In the process, defense lawyer Marc Bartra, who was still active for Dortmund, and a police officer were injured. According to the prosecution, W's goal was to kill players and thus bring down the BVB share price. W. himself had repeatedly stated in the trial that he had purposely designed the bombs to prevent serious damage.

Three days after the verdict at the district court of Dortmund, both Sergei W. and the public prosecutor's office had appealed. Although W. has now withdrawn his request for review, the judgment is not yet final. It will only be when the prosecution withdraws its objection.
