The success of French films abroad

French cinema is recovering internationally. 37.4 million admissions is the score of French films released in cinemas abroad last year. This is much better than in 2022 (+38.5%), but very far from the levels reached before Covid, when they could sometimes exceed 100 million admissions.

Unsurprisingly, it was mainstream, animation and family films that drove the numbers up. Miraculous: The film crushed the competition, with 7.15 million admissions. Based on the world-famous animated series, the story of superheroine Lady Bug has scored staggering abroad, especially in Russia. The country has become the leading export market for French cinema since competition from American studios, which no longer release their films there, has disappeared.

In second place, Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, followed by the animated film Pattie and the Wrath of Poseidon. The fascination for the gold of Versailles and the presence of Johnny Depp benefit Jeanne du Barry, in front of the Three Musketeers... And let's not forget the Palme d'Or at the last Cannes Film Festival, Anatomy of a Fall, which attracted one and a half million spectators internationally.
