On the afternoon of January 26, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology released in Beijing the results of the latest 11th Chinese Citizens’ Scientific Literacy Sample Survey, stating that the proportion of Chinese citizens with scientific literacy reached 10.56% in 2020, an increase of 4.36 percentage points from 6.20% in 2015. , An increase of 8.96 percentage points from 1.60% in 2005.

At this point, the goal of "the proportion of citizens with scientific literacy exceeding 10%" in 2020 has been successfully completed, marking that the level of scientific literacy of Chinese citizens has entered the ranks of innovative countries.

In 2020, the scientific literacy level of citizens in China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps will all meet or exceed their respective "13th Five-Year Plan" expected development goals.

Among them, Shanghai (24.30%) and Beijing (24.07%) are far ahead; Tianjin (16.58%), Jiangsu (13.84%), Zhejiang (13.53%), Guangdong (12.79%), Fujian (11.51%), and Shandong ( 11.47%), Hubei (10.95%), Anhui (10.80%) 8 provinces and cities exceed the overall national level; Liaoning (10.41%), Chongqing (10.20%), Henan (10.17%), Hunan (10.14%), Shaanxi (10.13) %), Hebei (10.05%), 6 provinces and cities all exceeded 10%.

The survey results also show that the problem of unbalanced development of Chinese citizens' scientific literacy still exists: the gap between the eastern and western regions in the scientific literacy level of citizens has further widened, and the gap between the eastern and western regions will be 4.83 percentage points in 2020, an increase of 1.15 percentage points from 2015; In 2020, the gap between urban and rural residents' scientific literacy level will reach 7.3 percentage points, and the gap between urban and rural areas is still significant.

In addition, citizens between 60 and 69 years old and people with primary education and below have an average of less than 5% of scientific literacy. It is urgent to improve the lifelong learning system and further strengthen the education, dissemination and popularization of groups with weak scientific abilities.

It is understood that China has carried out a national sample survey of citizens’ scientific literacy since 1992 and has successfully carried out 11 times so far.

The survey was organized and carried out from April to October 2020. The survey scope covers citizens aged 18-69 in 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. For the first time, it has fully covered 419 prefecture-level units, and the recovery is effective. There are 309,800 samples.
