«Memory of the Nation»

A weekly page provided by "Emirates Today", in cooperation with the "National Archives" of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, with the aim of introducing the way life in the Emirates before the federation, and during its early beginnings, and the great effort made by the founding fathers of the state for its establishment, and linking it to what the UAE leaders achieve, Today, her children are among the achievements the world has witnessed.

Few are the events that history stops at, and remain firmly present over time, and few have the strength and courage to change the shape of reality and impose a new reality as did the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, and his brothers the rulers of the Emirates, on the second of December 1971, by announcing the union and the establishment of the United Arab Emirates, to remain since that time the ideal model for unity and union, and the image was limited to documenting that process, as well as highlight these 12 clips attached to "Memory of the Nation".

From an early age, the idea of the union occupied Sheikh Zayed, and he took with the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the first step towards establishing the federation, so a meeting was held on February 18, 1968 in Al Sameeh, on the border between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and during that historic meeting Sheikh agreed Zayed and Sheikh Rashid to merge their two emirates into one union, to participate together in the performance of foreign affairs, defense, security and social services, and to adopt a common policy for immigration affairs, and left the rest of the administrative issues to the authority of the local government of each emirate.

This important agreement was known as the "Union Agreement", and it can be considered the first step towards unifying the entire Trucial Coast.

In addition to strengthening the union, and due to Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid's interest in strengthening it, they invited the rulers of the other five Trucial States to participate in the negotiations to form the union.

Successive talks

From 25 to 27 February 1968, rulers of the Emirates held a constitutional conference in Dubai, according to the official website of the "National Archives". This 11-point agreement, which began in Dubai, remained for a period of three years as the basis for intensive efforts to form the structure. The constitutional and legal framework of this “federation of Arab Emirates”, which consists of those Emirates that are members of it. During that period, several meetings were held at different levels of authority, and agreement on the main issues in the meetings of the Supreme Council of Rulers.

On the second of December 1971, the establishment of an independent and sovereign state was officially announced, and after that, on February 10, 1972, Ras al-Khaimah joined the federation, so the federation became integrated by including the seven emirates, and this newly established federal state became officially known as the United Arab Emirates.

In his narration of the facts of the declaration of the establishment of the Union, writer Grim Wilson, in the book "Zayed ... A Man Who Built a Nation," published by the National Archives, describes an aspect of the many events that took place during that period, saying: "On December 1, 1971, the British Political Resident began A tour of the seven emirates, during which the rulers signed a document under which all agreements and treaties that had been concluded with Britain since the "General Treaty of Peace" that were signed in 1820 were canceled. The next morning, five rulers met in Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum's palace, on the beach of Jumeirah, with them Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Mualla, who was then the crown prince of Umm Al Quwain, took over the rule afterwards, and they drew up an integrated work map for the establishment of the UAE, and the founding document was signed .. Hence the beginning towards achieving the dream and a new state was born.

A leader of standing

Describing the establishment of the union as the beginning of building a new state, the first agricultural advisor to Sheikh Zayed, Abdul Hafeez Khan, said in his book "Fifty Years in the Al-Ain Oasis", issued by the National Archives: “Thus Sheikh Zayed crowned his three-year efforts to unify the Trucial Emirates under one flag. During that period, he was able to convince everyone concerned of the merits of the union without affecting his sovereignty, and Sheikh Zayed laid down the rules of the union when he guided him to his personal conviction and his insightful vision of the world around him, and soon an Arab leader of stature appeared, and an ambassador for Arab unity as well, and as soon as his dream was realized In the Federation, until he began to look to the wider world around him, and his image emerged as a leader who is good at managing affairs on the world stage.

In addition to that, the establishment of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Economic Development in the year of the founding of the UAE confirmed Sheikh Zayed's commitment to sharing the fruits of Abu Dhabi's prosperity resulting from oil revenues with the least fortunate countries, Arab, Islamic, and non-Islamic. The fund played a great role in providing no less than 24 billion dollars in economic aid to the least fortunate countries, and to institutions that supervise their social and economic development.

Immortal moments

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, emphasized the importance of the union in a statement to His Highness, in which he said: “The moments of raising the UAE flag for the first time in this house, the Union House in Dubai, are moments that filled us all and are still With all feelings of pride, pride, independence and unity as well, and the election of Zayed as president and Rashid as deputy in the same place, it was the beginning of the start of a blessed journey of construction and development in the good land of the Emirates, and our duty towards the people of the country is to immortalize them these great moments, and we remind them all that the humility of beginnings can lead to Great endings if accompanied by loyalty to the homeland and sincere determination and high energy ».

To commemorate these timeless moments, His Highness ordered in December 2012 to rehabilitate the Union House in all its details as it was when the UAE federation was announced on December 2, 1971.
