The outrage over the bill has been great because it coincided with a high-profile incident last week when four police officers brutally beat a black music producer.
The abuse was filmed and spread widely on social media and is an example of filming that the new law would have prevented.
- Under no circumstances do we want to ban anyone from filming law enforcement interventions, says Christophe Castaner, group leader in the governing party LREM.
He says that the proposal will be completely rewritten and that a new version will be presented.
