The BBC's newly appointed Director - General Tim Davie unveiled the new guidelines on Thursday.

These are to ensure the public service company's impartiality.

The guidelines are primarily aimed at news staff, management and presenters.

The objectivity requirements mean that they cannot participate in demonstrations or marches that can be considered controversial.

What is controversial needs to be assessed, but staff should assume that most demonstrations are considered to be so to some degree, the guidelines state.

"Is prepared to take the necessary disciplinary action"

The guidelines also require that social media posts should not be liked, as it can be seen as taking a stand on an issue.

Guiding additions on how to avoid bias through followers, likes and shares, will be added.

Employees who receive income outside the organization should also disclose this in a public database.

Last month, Director-General Tim Davie said that if the guidelines were not followed, the person concerned could be suspended from social media.

- I am prepared to take the necessary disciplinary action, all the way to dismissal, Tim Davie said then.
