As statues related to slavery and colonization are debunked across the world, echoing the death of George Floyd in the United States, the city of Bordeaux in southwestern France has decided to explain.

Publicity

At the beginning of June 2020, five new street signs were hung.

They specify the slavery past of honored local personalities.

An initiative that is the subject of debate.

Some associations believe that it does not go far enough.

Researchers consider it unnecessary, even anachronistic.

RFI went to Bordeaux to better understand the terms of this debate, in a city that has only been facing its slavery past for 20 years.
