Thursday evening, demonstrators waving Turkish flags and shouting "Allah Akbar" ("God is the greatest", in Arabic) gathered in the center of Dijon, before being dispersed by the police who have used tear gas.

The socialist mayor of Dijon François Rebsamen denounced this “radical Turkish nationalist demonstration” as “absolutely intolerable”, demanding that “this kind of demonstration, a real provocation against the Republic, be prohibited”.

For his part, Gilles Platret, LR mayor of Chalon-sur-Saône and invested for the next regional elections in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, had tweeted: "Communitarianism is gaining ground once again in #Dijon, in favor tonight of an identity demonstration of the #Turks against a background of religious cries, in the city center.

What a pity to see, after the interethnic riots of this summer, this city so gangrenous!

"A hateful tweet"

François Rebsamen, former Minister of Labor, interprets this tweet by “regional electoral aims”.

“As for the mayor of Chalon-sur-Saône who spoke with an odious tweet, I regret the smallness of his mind,” he said on Friday.

The prefect of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region Fabien Sudry condemned in a statement "with the greatest firmness the gathering and strolling of about 70 young people from several communities of Côte-d'Or, displaying Turkish flags, ( Thursday) evening in the streets of Dijon ”.

"The intelligence services are working to identify the participants," added the prefect, adding that "no degradation" was to be deplored.

Investigation for "violence in meetings"

An investigation of flagrance was opened for "participation in a violent group for violence and degradation", "violence in meetings on depositaries" and "organization of a demonstration without declaration", told AFP the prosecutor of the Republic of Dijon, Eric Mathais.

The protest came as tensions between Turkish ultra-nationalists and the Armenian diaspora escalated Wednesday near Lyon.

After a brawl on the A7 motorway in the morning at Vienne (Isère), Turkish activists tried to do battle in the evening in Décines-Charpieu, a city in the Lyon suburbs where a large Armenian community lives.

Dijon, for its part, was shaken in mid-June by a show of force by hundreds of members of the Chechen community who had marched through the city for several nights in revenge for the assault on one of theirs they said was the made up of members of the Maghreb community.
