The International Council on Books for Young People, the Swiss-based non-profit organization concerned with spreading the culture of reading among adolescents, has chosen four books by Emirati authors within its collection of silent books for the year 2019, which was recently released by the Council, and includes 67 books from 16 countries.

The selection comes as a culmination of the pioneering efforts made by the UAE Board on Books for Young People, the national branch of the International Council on Books for Young People in the UAE, to enhance the participation of publishers, authors and cultural institutions in the UAE in spreading awareness of the importance of silent books, and confirming their impact in supporting civilizational convergence between cultures, as the Council organized the first exhibition Of its kind in the UAE for silent books in August 2017.

For her part, President of the UAE Board on Books for Young People, Marwa Al-Akroubi, said: “The Council is proud to include four Emirati books in the most distinguished collection of silent books for the year 2019, issued by the International Council on Books for Young People, and includes more than 60 prominent works from around the world, and we look forward to this being The distinguished honor is a source of inspiration for writers and illustrators in the UAE, to invest in the creative potential of this literary genre, especially to help children overcome cultural and linguistic barriers and develop their imaginations through expressive pictures and drawings.

She added: “Picture books are distinguished by their ability to attract all children, regardless of their educational level, and of different reading abilities, to participate in the stories and interact with their events, which enhances their mental abilities and critical thinking skills, and opens wide horizons for them to rapprochement with other children, as well as motivate them to Sailing in the world of silent books and going through different experiences, and getting to know new ideas and meanings only through pictures.

The UAE Board on Books for Young People had organized a series of training workshops in the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, provided by a group of the most prominent artists specialized in this field from around the world, with the aim of developing the capabilities of young illustrators and developing their skills to provide silent books with original and innovative content.

Noble idea

The idea of ​​the silent books project dates back to 2012, when the International Council on Books for Young People launched the initiative "Silent Books, from the world to Lampedusa and from there to the world", which is a cultural project targeting refugee children on the island of Lampedusa, the largest of the Italian islands in the Mediterranean, and a gateway. The crossing of refugees and migrants from Africa and the Middle East to the European continent, and works to provide them with a set of picture books, to help them overcome the language barrier and enjoy reading it and understanding its content.
