There is still work to be done.

The representation of the diversity of the company in the television programs “marks time” and the chains must “reflect more” this diversity, declared the president of the CSA in an interview with the

Journal du dimanche

.

"Everyone must be able to find their way into television," said Roch-Olivier Maistre, questioned on the barometer of diversity on television, unveiled next Tuesday and which is based on the study of thousands of hours of programs.

Very low representation of overseas territories

"The representation of the diversity of the territories in the programs is weak", again said the president of the Superior council of audio-visual, which will reveal the details of the barometer "in the presence of several ministers and persons in charge of audio-visual".

Thus, people residing in overseas territories are very poorly represented (0.4%);

those who live in large groups of working-class suburbs also (7%).

“With regard to socio-professional categories, 73% are CSP + while they represent only 28% of the population.

Likewise, we see little of the inactive (15%) even though they represent 45% of the population, ”he added.

Likewise, the over 65s, who represent 21% of the population, “are not very present (6%)” on television and people with disabilities “are only represented by 0.7 % ”.

Progress in series and fiction

The president of the CSA, who has held his post since February 2019, however noted progress at the level of series and fictions, with "people perceived as" non-white "" who "occupy more positive roles".

Regarding the representation of women, he indicated that their presence had increased (40% of people who intervene on the screen), with the animators and presenters almost on par with men.

But, he notes, “the experts are still insufficiently represented.

For example, during the crisis, we did not see many female medical professors on screen ”.

Asked about the lack of coercive power of the CSA, Roch-Olivier Maistre underlined that "this barometer, important for the chains, makes it possible to underline and make public what is going and what is not going".

"In the light of these observations, I wish, with the whole college, to take the initiative again to initiate a new dynamic with the channels," he said.
