On September 25, the State Council Information Office held a briefing to introduce the progress of the new coronavirus vaccine work.

A reporter asked whether Phase III clinical trials will be carried out in places where the second wave of epidemics occurred, such as Beijing, Dalian, and Xinjiang.

Zeng Guang, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the choice of where to conduct clinical trials is determined by the vaccine research and development unit based on needs.

Three conditions must be met for the third phase of clinical trials: first, the place must be continuously experiencing epidemics; second, it has a high incidence; third, local residents know, agree, and participate voluntarily, and get support from the local government .

Because the epidemic situation in China is very well controlled. After the outbreak in Beijing, Dalian, and Xinjiang, it was quickly cleared and well controlled. The first two conditions were not met. Therefore, Phase III clinical trials are not suitable for these places.
