Hokkaido Kamoenai Village "Nuclear Waste" Final Disposal Site Tour Residents' Briefing Session September 27, 0:00

The first resident briefing session was held by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Kamoenai Village, Hokkaido, where there is a movement to consider applying for a survey on the final disposal site for so-called "nuclear waste".

While residents were concerned about the danger of waste, some expressed their understanding of accepting the survey.

In Kamoenai Village, Hokkaido, a petition from the local Chamber of Commerce to consider applying for a survey was submitted to the village council this month over the selection of a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants, so-called "nuclear waste." It has been submitted and the review is ongoing.

In response to this move, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NUMO = Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan held the first resident briefing session in the village on the 26th, and 131 residents participated.

While some participants were concerned about the dangers of waste, there were several opinions that they understood the acceptance of the survey.

There were also calls to prevent reputational damage when the investigation was started.

A man in his 80s who attended the briefing said, "I understood the content well. I felt that I could apply for the survey if I could make more decisions."

A woman in her 40s said, "The movement so far has been quick. If you want to proceed with the investigation, I would like the village council to proceed with the deliberation carefully."

Residents' briefing sessions in Kamoenai Village are held every day until the 30th of this month, and the village council will meet again on the 2nd of next month to examine the petition from the Chamber of Commerce.
