  • Babacar Gueye, a 27-year-old Senegalese, died in 2015 in Rennes, hit by five bullets fired by the police.

  • His family still contests the self-defense invoked by the policeman who shot him.

  • A reconstruction of the facts will take place on Thursday.

A reconstruction of the facts is scheduled for Thursday morning.

On the night of December 2 to 3, 2015, Babacar Gueye died in the stairwell of a building in Rennes, hit by five bullets fired by a police officer from the anti-crime brigade.

Five after the tragedy, the sister of this 27-year-old Senegalese still contests the self-defense invoked by the policeman who shot.

“This is a total lie.

They gave different versions, it doesn't fit, ”Awa Gueye said at a press conference on Saturday, wearing a Justice for Babacar t-shirt and mask.

"This reconstruction of the facts is important to me," she added, stressing that her brother had remained "on the ground for an hour, handcuffed and in underwear" after receiving five bullets in the body.

"The ballistic trajectories show that none of the five bullets fired came head-on," the support committee said in a press release.

"Judicial truth is not media truth", retorted Me Frédéric Birrien, lawyer for the police officer.

The author of the shooting had been placed under the status of assisted witness in June 2019.

Two investigations closed in this case

Babacar Gueye was staying with a friend when he was seized with an anxiety attack in the middle of the night from December 2 to 3, 2015, grabbing a table knife.

The firefighters called by the friend had arrived with eight police officers.

Unable to control him with a defective taser, the scene continued on the stairs, where a police officer, a member of the Bac, had fired five times.

Babacar was then handcuffed to the ground and died despite the treatment provided.

An investigation opened by the prosecution for "attempted murder of persons holding public authority" was dismissed in July 2016, as was an investigation by the IGPN, the police.

The family lodged a complaint with a civil party in January 2017 and a judicial investigation was opened shortly after.
