Emmanuel Macron did not want to comment on Friday on the controversy over the "correct outfits" required in certain colleges and high schools, contenting himself to call for "common sense" rather than new regulations.

Questioned on this subject by a young person in a street of Condom (Gers), on the sidelines of a visit devoted to Heritage Days, the Head of State expressed his reluctance to answer him because "I'm not sure. that I have to get involved in everything ”.

But "I understand the feeling" created by the controversy launched by calls on the social networks of middle and high school girls to defend the wearing of the miniskirt or the "crop top" (short T-shirt) prohibited in some establishments.

"There is a freedom of dress" but it is "a good thing that we try to keep some codes in college, in high school.

Because afterwards you never know where it ends, ”commented Emmanuel Macron.

No controversy

"Common sense is better than a long regulation in this matter", he added.

In the National Education, the control of clothing comes under the internal regulations of each establishment.

But the National Union of High School Students (UNL), which supports the mobilization, pointed to the "legal vagueness" surrounding these regulations.

For Emmanuel Macron, young people must accept that parents and teachers "explain the rules".

"We've all been there and I don't have the feeling that it took away some freedom."

"I find that, all of us, we should keep a little common sense and not create controversy every week," he concluded.

Asked Monday, the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer had advocated "a position of balance and common sense".

“Just dress normally and you'll be fine,” he said.

The President of the Republic did not comment on the substance of the problem, the double standard which means that the dress rules in schools are very restrictive for girls, much less or non-existent for boys.
