Mr. Sugimura became the president of the National Cancer Center in 1984, and has been the honorary president since 1992.

During this time, he has been leading cancer research in Japan, such as promoting the national "10-year comprehensive strategy for cancer", and received the Order of Culture in 1978 and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in 1998.
