“It is with pain in our hearts that Frederick Nathaniel Toots Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight, surrounded by his family, at the University Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica,” his family said in a statement to Variety.
The cause of death was not disclosed, but the publication notes that on September 2, the musician took a coronavirus test - the results were not reported.
Hibbert founded Toots & the Maytals in the early 1960s, which became one of the flagships of reggae.
