In just two weeks, Melilla has gone from being one of the Spanish regions with the best performance in the transmission of the virus to being above the national average in terms of the accumulated incidence per hundred thousand inhabitants.

An increase in cases that has made

the Government of the autonomous city shuffle to request the declaration of a state of alarm

to try to stop the transmission of covid.

Until now, no autonomy has asked the central Executive for authorization to return to the state of alarm in the whole of a region.

As the Minister of Social Policies of Melilla, Mohamed Mohamed Mohand, explained this Friday at a press conference, with this measure they do not intend to confine the population but to

have a "legal umbrella"

that allows the Government of the Autonomous City of Melilla to adopt " strong and proportionate measures that should be aimed at reducing mobility in the territory of Melilla and limiting the gathering of people in public and private spaces ", reports Efe.

14 hospitalized

According to the data offered by the counselor,

in the last hours they have detected 25 new positives

that bring the figure to 362 active cases due to covid.

Fourteen people remain hospitalized, two of them in the ICU (one more than the day before).

Patients admitted to or in the ICU are between 60 and 84 years old, while 56% of the positives have been in men and 44% in women, according to regional data.

On the other hand, the figures provided this Friday by the Ministry of Health show that since the beginning of the pandemic, Melilla has registered a total of

three deaths and 577 cases of coronavirus, 28 more than the previous day

.

Of these 577 cases, 274 have been detected in the last two weeks so its cumulative incidence (AI), the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, is already 316.8 compared to 59.8 Asturias (the Spanish region with the lowest cumulative incidence at present) and the 550 in Madrid, the one with the most.

The average AI in Spain is 238.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and only Madrid, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja now have higher cumulative incidents than that of Melilla.

A very different X-ray from the one the autonomous city showed during June, July and a good part of August.

On August 28 - two weeks ago - a total of 300 cases had been detected since the beginning of the health crisis and two deaths, while its cumulative incidence -130- was below the national average (189).

Going back a week, on August 20 the statistics counted a total of 217 cases since the beginning of the pandemic and a cumulative incidence of 35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, only improved by Ceuta, with 33.

Figures that, however, were already more worrying than those registered at the end of July.

On the 28th of that month, the total balance of cases was 129 positives and the cumulative incidence of 3.47.

Only Ceuta (1.18) and Asturias (2.54) had more favorable accumulated incidents than Melilla that day in July.

Three worrying outbreaks

The worsening of the situation is evident especially when compared to June and July.

During the first half of July, Melilla maintained a cumulative incidence of between 0 and 2.3 by stabilizing a number of total cases below 130. And June showed an equally positive evolution: the month began with a record of 121 cases from the start of the pandemic and an AI of 0, and ended it with 126 and an AI of 2.31.

Regarding the outbreaks of assets, Mohamed Mohamed Mohand has specified that 15 outbreaks have been recorded involving 183 positive cases and 1,030 direct contacts.

Three are especially worrying: that of the Center for the Temporary Stay of Immigrants (CETI), with 57 positives and 317 contacts;

that of the Higher Police Headquarters with 18 assets and 63 contacts and that of the penitentiary center (eight cases).
