Jude Law and Carrie Coon in Sean Durkin -

SND

  • The Deauville Festival ended with the consecration of “The Nest”, a frightening film starring Jude Law.

  • If the American stars could not go to Deauville, the festival still offered great encounters.

  • The selections for the Cannes and Annecy Festival also had some wonderful surprises in store.

If the Covid-19 deprived Americans of the Deauville Festival, the event nonetheless benefited from a quality program and the visit of many French-speaking talents such as Maïwenn, Benoît Poelvoorde, Louis Garrel or Clémence Poésy.

20 Minutes

followed the Festival for ten days of meetings and discoveries proving that Bruno Barde and his team have been able to adapt to the health situation while taking care to preserve the health of festival-goers.

A not so cozy "nest"

The jury, chaired by Vanessa Paradis, showed a very sure taste in distinguishing

The Nest

by Sean Dorkin (release date unknown).

This intriguing thriller brings together Jude Law and the discovery of Carrie Coon in an English mansion, and has not stolen its Grand Prix, along with that of Criticism and Revelation as it skilfully plays on the nerves of the spectators.

First Cow

, by Kelly Reichardt also largely deserves the Jury Prize, which will no doubt help this powerful work on the friendship of two men in 1820 to find a French distributor.

We wish the same to

Lorelei

, by Sabrina Doyle, who won the same trophy by telling the love story of an ex-convict and a mother, to the anxious

The Assistant

, by Kitty Gree. , celebrated for its staging and its way of sharing the ordeal of an employee battered by her boss mogul, or the touching

Uncle Frank

of Alan Ball (available on Amazon Prime), where the creator - of the series

True Blood in

particular - tells of his coming out.

Face-to-face guests

Félix Moati and Clémence Poésy, who came to present

Resistance

by Jonathan Jakubowicz, delighted autograph hunters, as did Bruno Podalydès, a member of the jury who twisted the spectators with his comedy

Les 2 Alfred

, obviously presented out of competition.

Festival-goers were also able to meet the director Barbet Schroeder, to whom Deauville paid tribute, and Sylvie Pialat, the producer of

Erase History

.

Noémie Merlant, meanwhile, received a standing ovation after the screening of

A Good Man

, by Marie-Camille Mention-Schaar, where she plays a transgender man choosing to postpone his operation to have a child with his partner.

A scent of Croisette

By hosting part of the selection of the Cannes Festivals, Deauville has opened up to countries other than America.

On the French side,

Les 2 Aflred

by Bruno Podalydès (released January 13) and

Des Hommes

, by Lucas Belvaux (released November 11) received a warm welcome.

Maïwenn's

DNA

(released on October 28) is the work that most impressed us with its mastery and humor, to tell how a young woman reconnects with her Algerian roots after the death of her grandfather.

Genre cinema was also in the spotlight with the Korean zombie film

Peninsula

, by Sang Ho-yeon (October 21), a vitamin-packed sequel to

Last Train to Busan

, and especially the excellent

Teddy

of the Boukherma brothers (released on January 13 ) on a 100% French werewolf.
