5 people were arrested on suspicion that 470 tons of untreated sludge was discharged into the sewer Yokohama 9th September 16:46

Five substantive managers of an industrial waste treatment company in Yokohama were arrested for draining approximately 470 tons of sludge that had not been properly treated such as removing harmful substances into the sewer.

Police are investigating the details, assuming that the company has been running sludge into the sewer for about 30 years and has been getting unreasonable profits of more than 2 billion yen.

Five persons were arrested, including Masae Matsumoto (66), a substantive manager of the industrial waste processing company "Matsumoto Construction" in Minami-ku, Yokohama-shi.



According to the police, Matsumoto suspected that the sludge entrusted to us by a contractor would not be treated properly at the company's treatment facility for about two months from May last year, and about 470 tons would be discharged to the sewer. Because of this, there is a suspicion of violating the Waste Management Law.



Zinc and lead, which greatly exceed the standard values, were detected in the water of the surrounding sewers, but no health hazard has been confirmed so far.



According to the investigation, it seems that the sludge had not been treated for about 30 years and had been drained into the sewer since the malfunction of the purification device around 1990, and the total amount is about 290,000 tons.



The police are investigating the details, assuming that they had earned an unjustified profit of over 2 billion yen.



The police have not confirmed the pros and cons of the five allegedly to impede the investigation.
