Saudi justice sentenced, Monday, September 7, to terms ranging from seven to twenty years in prison, eight defendants tried for their involvement in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, assassinated in October 2018 on the premises of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, reports Al Arabia TV channel.

Five defendants were sentenced to twenty years in prison, another was sentenced to ten years in prison, the last two were sentenced to seven years, said the public television channel Ekhbariya.

The convicts have not been identified.

Last December, five death sentences were handed down in the preliminary verdict of the trial, and three other defendants were sentenced to prison.

The one delivered Monday is final, says Al Arabia.

Last May, the family of the murdered journalist granted pardon to the murderers, paving the way for a lighter sentence.

Saudi Arabia does not have a codified legal system and, under Islamic law, a pardon from a victim's family can amount to pardon or a stay of sentence.

After multiple contradictory statements, the Saudi authorities admitted that Jamal Khashoggi, who had gone into exile in the United States, had been killed and dismembered on October 2, 2018 by Saudi agents who had acted, according to them, on their own initiative.
