In 1971, Liv Ullmann played the role of Kristina in Jan Troell's film adaptation of The Emigrants and she would now, almost 40 years later, have played Kristina's mother Anna in the new film directed by Erik Poppe.

But that will not be the case.

Liv Ullmann leaves the role due to the uncertainties that the corona pandemic entails and is replaced by Lena Strömdahl, who has previously acted in the TV series Bron, Rederiet and Saltön.

It is already known that the artist Tove Lo will make her acting debut in the new film adaptation.

She will play the role of Ulrika in Västergöhl, a former prostitute who seeks new opportunities in the United States.

A role played by Monica Zetterlund in Jan Troell's film adaptation.

The emigrants have a planned premiere on Christmas Day 2021.
