On Thursday, Jimmy Lai was acquitted of the charges from 2017. He was suspected of threatening a reporter from a rival newspaper to his pro-democracy and Beijing-critical newspapers, writes The Guardian.

According to the verdict, the accusations could not be proven as the witness was not reliable.

Witnesses must have been part of a special team that had the task of following public figures, including Jimmy Lai.

Instead, the verdict showed that it was rather Jimmy Lai who temporarily lost his temper, and not that he had planned to arouse fear in the reporter.

Also been accused of foreign cooperation

Although Jimmy Lai is no longer a suspect in this case, most of the charges against him remain. He has been arrested at least three times before since the mass protests in Hong Kong last year. Last month, he was also accused of foreign cooperation, in part because of his visit to the United States last year, when he met with Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
