  • Netflix.Tiger King, the latest Netflix phenomenon: reality once again surpasses fiction

The zoo of "Tiger King", the Netflix documentary series that aroused a television phenomenon during the confinement by the coronavirus, closes its doors permanently after losing the operating license issued by the US authorities.

The center, known as GW Exotic Animal Park and located in the state of Oklahoma, became world famous when Netflix premiered the documentary series "Tiger King" last March and is currently owned by Jeff Lowe after its previous owner, the popular Joe Exotic, will go to prison.

In a statement, the current owner assures that the phenomenon aroused by the Netflix production "has brought more attention than any human deserves, good and bad."

It also accuses environmental and animal rights organizations such as PETA of pressuring the US Department of Agriculture to close the facilities.

But the version of the authorities differs, since in their latest inspection report they cite several infractions such as that the cat's food was not properly refrigerated and the owners tried to deceive with false repair bills.

Exotic himself, the former owner of the zoo and the protagonist of the documentary series, is currently in jail for hiring a contract killer and committing various crimes against flora and the lives of animals.

The park's closure is "immediate" and its new owners will move the equipment and animals to a new location from which they will record "content for cable television and streaming services."

The facilities became world famous when Netflix released the documentary series "Tiger King" last March.

Although the initial idea of directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin was to portray the world of private zoos for big cats in the US, "Tiger King" ended up hooking audiences not so much for its tigers or lions but for the eccentric and controversial human characters that appeared in this sordid production.

The attention sparked by the show is such that Nicolas Cage will make his television debut as Joe Exotic in a new eight-episode series produced by CBS Television Studios and Imagine Television.

It is not the only television project underway that is inspired by "Tiger King", since Kate McKinnon, well known for the comedy show "Saturday Night Live", will play Exotic's enemy, Carole Baskin in another series
