Mid-February 2003. Sandrine David, our on-board reporter, discovers the traditional Indian Ocean dhows which anchor in the old port of Mombasa. These ships have been driving commerce in this corner of the world for centuries, but their importance is declining.

Erik Orsenna, the guest writer at the stopover, has taken up residence at the town's old Yacht Club, whose decor recalls the British colonial era. He will make it the subject of his original short story, seeking to describe the passage of time. A journey between two eras.
