“The fragments of the Beirut explosion were scattered and reached Algeria and hit me, and I became wounded like you, Lebanon.” With these words, the Algerian plastic artist, Abdel Halim Kabish, expressed his work entitled “Beirut’s Fragments”, in which he painted the horror of the tragedy that struck an entire city, destroying homes And I killed innocents, so his painting was soaked in destruction, and a scale of blood, then he soon completed it with revelations, to make it more relatable to the incident, so he painted his body in red color and lay on the ground near it, to represent the shrapnel that hit him, and hit everyone who saw the scale of the disaster.

With many dark colors that occupy a large area of ​​the painting, he embodied a scapegoat, to let the fire rise from it to the sky, and to occupy a vast area of ​​the artwork, and after its completion and to provide a suggestion, he let the blood flow from the painting and reach his body lying on the ground.

We relate to the moment

Kebish said to “Emirates Today” about work: “I belong to a group of artists whose subjects are inspired by reality. My work is always linked to the moment, and what a person experiences everywhere, whether in Algeria or anywhere around the world, and when I saw the explosion, which is a painful calamity , I had a reaction, and from the horror and magnitude of the disaster, and since I have a deep relationship with Lebanon, even on a personal level, as I have many friends in this beloved country, I took the brush and the colors and arrived night by day and embodied the moment. He added: “When I completed the work, I found that the painting is not enough, that it is incomplete, and there is a certain element that is missing, and this is why I decided to supplement the colors with the art of suggestion. the art".

The Algerian creator believed that “the art of suggestion that he used in the work gives the work a lot of power in the scene that is presented, as he deliberately used this type of expression, because he wanted an expression that succeeds in conveying the scene and the pain to the recipient with the same strength that characterized the disaster, especially since the wound That was great".

And he continued on the concept of work: “I wanted to reach the world, that a shrapnel arrived in Algeria, to my house and my studio, and it hit me, and I became wounded like you, Lebanon. The shrapnel from this explosion reached the whole world, and hit us all.”

I did not feel the time

Kebish presented the work after continuous hours of work. After seeing the news on television, he found himself in a moment calling for expression through drawing, explaining that “during the artwork he did not feel the time, so he worked for continuous hours on the painting, which reached nearly 10 hours, And he arrived in it day and night without feeling tired. '

He pointed out that "when painting begins, he becomes absent from reality and the temporal dimension, and at that moment he finds himself in another world, specifically in the center of Beirut."

Kebish is related to Beirut through memory, so he visited the city, knew its streets and its buildings, and this made him more affected by the accident, because the relationship is deep with the city, and not only because he saw the scene from a distance, as he felt tragic, especially since there is a great similarity and convergence between the Algerian capital and Beirut.

He said, "When the artist finds himself in front of disasters, he cannot be unaffected, and then painful feelings form in him, but his expression is different. There are those who cry, scream or sing, and the plastic artist paints."

It is not only Beirut that struck Kebish with pain, as he embodied many of the pain of the Arab countries in paintings expressing the disasters that affected many countries, considering that "the artist belongs to humanity."

Finally, the artist presented a special painting about "Corona", in which he painted the doctor who carries a lot of hospital tools with him, as if he alone carries the greatest concern in fighting the epidemic, to express through it the great weight that is placed on the doctor, who suffers this stage.

Biography of "Halim"

Abdul Halim Kabish was born in 1972, studied fine arts, and holds a postgraduate diploma in arts. He participated in solo and group exhibitions, and won a number of awards. And he turns to the expressionist school in monitoring reality, but it is expressive that carries special features that the critics have called "Halim Expressionism."
