European countries that, like Spain, are once again registering a significant increase in coronavirus cases after a temporary improvement in the situation should reconsider re-launching some of the measures they took at the beginning of this health crisis to stop its expansion . This is recommended by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in its eleventh assessment of the situation of the coronavirus pandemic, published this Monday. Spain appears as one of the countries with the highest cumulative incidence between July 20 and August 2.

The European Union agency dedicated to fighting infectious diseases warns that the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a major threat to health. The various measures put in place to control the crisis, which reached its peak in early April in Europe, managed to reduce its incidence. But as countries controlled transmission and the burden on the health system eased, many of these measures were relaxed or were no longer in force in order to live with the virus. As a consequence, this body warns, "in many European countries there is a recent increase in cases of Covid-19. Although many countries are testing asymptomatic people or with mild symptoms, which has resulted in an increase in cases, there is a real increase in cases in several countries as a result of the relaxation of social distancing measures . "

"As more stringent physical distancing measures have been relaxed over time, public health authorities have encouraged citizens to spend more time outdoors, as there is known to be a greater risk of transmission indoors than In Spain, this has led to multiple outdoor activities being allowed, with the reopening of terraces in bars and restaurants, and before the reopening of cinemas or other indoor activities, "says the report.

The European body considers that after the relaxation of the measures, in our country numerous outbreaks associated with outdoor activities have been detected in Catalonia and in most Spanish regions, especially associated with young people who participated in nightlife activities.

The report notes that the increased incidence and associated hospitalizations and deaths can be mitigated if sufficient control measures are re-implemented or strengthened.

"The countries that are currently observing an increase in cases, after having lifted their control measures after having experienced a temporary improvement in the epidemiological situation, should consider reinstating selected measures," says the text, adding that this reintroduction of measures it should be done using a studied and phased approach.

Likewise, the document recalls the importance of carrying out an adequate detection and tracking of cases .

"Large-scale testing, accompanied by case isolation and extensive case tracking, is key to controlling transmission and is the basis for effective surveillance as well as an adequate public health response to Covid-19," he says. the text.

Speed is essential, adds the document, which also suggests that to optimize the pazos, "authorities may consider initiating the contact tracing process in possible and probable cases, while waiting for the result of a diagnostic test."

Most of the new cases registered in the last 14 days evaluated in the European Union and the United Kingdom (111,840) have been registered in Spain (28,267), Romania (15,420), France (13,245), United Kingdom (8,743) and Germany ( 8,319). Also the incidence of infected cases per 100,000 inhabitants is rising in European countries, although the report indicates that it is lower than what was on April 9, at the peak of the epidemic.

The fact that there are now surveillance systems and sanitary measures, as well as testing and tracing, suggests that Europe is better prepared to prevent and control outbreaks, the report concludes.
