No less than 62% of French people say they are in favor of the compulsory wearing of a mask outside to fight against the spread of coronavirus. They are even 84% to say they are ready to wear a mask under these circumstances, according to a poll conducted by YouGov for HuffPost and published on Wednesday.

Likewise, nearly seven in ten respondents believe masks should be free. The population therefore seems generally quite inclined to protect themselves in this way. For 80% of respondents, the obligation to protect their nose and mouth outdoors is good news. The French say they mostly agree with the idea that "the mask is a useful protective tool in the fight against Covid-19".

Political disparities

The survey conducted this Monday and Tuesday among 1,041 adults shows that the opinion of the French about the usefulness of the mask and the need to wear it outside also varies little according to the age of the respondents. However, there is a gender difference in this positioning: 68% of women are in favor of the obligation to wear a mask outdoors, against 55% of men.

Disparities are also observed in the political affiliations of the respondents. 42% of supporters of the National Rally (RN) are opposed to the application of the measure in outdoor spaces. They are only 26% among the voters of the Republicans or among those of The Republic in motion.
