The number of people diagnosed positive for the new coronavirus has increased by more than 30% in a week, faster than the increase in the number of tests carried out, according to the weekly report of Public Health France published Thursday. During the week of July 27 to August 2, 7,565 people tested positive in metropolitan France, or +33% compared to the previous week which had seen a jump in the number of cases (+ 57%, with 5,695).

This increase in new positive cases "remains greater than the increase in the number of patients tested" (+ 14%, 505,945), underlines Public Health France. The daily report published Thursday by the Directorate General of Health goes in the same direction: 1,604 cases confirmed in the last 24 hours, after 1,695 the day before, while this figure has returned to the 1,000 mark since the end of July.

Growing clusters

According to Public Health France, the positivity rate is also increasing (1.6%, against 1.4% the previous week in mainland France) over the week of July 27 to August 2, as well as the incidence rate which exceeds the bar of 10 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants in France (11.6, against 8.7 the previous week). This incidence rate, higher than 20 in 10 departments, is particularly high in Mayenne even if it is decreasing (48 against 148 the previous week), but also in Paris where it is increasing (31 against 17).

On the other hand “as of August 4, 2020, the weekly upward trend in clusters since July is accentuated, with 91 clusters reported” between July 27 and August 2. But the number of cases per focus “seems” to be on the decline even if some are still under investigation. Of the 609 clusters reported across the whole of France (94% in metropolitan France), a little more than half have been closed.

The number of patients in intensive care rose to 390 Thursday, or 6 more in 24 hours, while this balance of patients in shifts oscillates between increase and decrease in recent days, according to the daily report of the DGS. Ile de France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Hauts-de-France and Guyana account for 69% of patients in intensive care. France now has 30,312 deaths, or 7 more in 24 hours, including 19,806 in hospitals and 10,506 in nursing homes and other social and medico-social establishments. This last figure, which dates from Tuesday, will be updated on August 11.
