A hair salon in Springfield, Missouri has become the center of one of the investigations that may have the greatest practical impact on the spread of the coronavirus. Even the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the reference body for Public Health in the country, has collected , without citing the name, what happened in one of the chain's establishments 'Great Clips'.

It all started on May 12 , when Stylist A , as the study published by the CDC called it, began to develop respiratory symptoms compatible with the coronavirus. He continued to work for eight more days , until he tested positive for PCR and had to temporarily quit his job. A second companion with whom I had contact in that salon, 'stylist B ', developed similar symptoms three days later, on May 15. But, in the same way, he continued to provide his services for five more days . And like her partner, when she confirmed that she had tested positive, she stopped attending to clients.

Between them, they cut the hair of 139 clients from the time they began to feel the first symptoms of Covid-19 until the confirmation of the contagion forced them to take their leave. But they did so in strict compliance with the ordinances of the City of Springfield and the health policy of their classroom. Both recommend the use of masks (surgical, type N95 or even textiles) for both employees and customers. However, the two stylists did not always have the mask on in the absence of clients during the days when the first one already had symptoms.

Following the protocols, the Health Department contacted the 139 clients who had been potentially exposed to the contagion. They were asked to quarantine. None showed symptoms of having contracted Covid-19. The PCR test was offered to all of them . Almost half, 67 people, had it done, all with negative results. A month after the initial contact, the same department asked them again: among the 104 who responded, there were also no signs of contagion. Their average age was 52 years, 74% were men and they were in the establishment a little less than 20 minutes on average.

They all came with their noses and mouths covered, mostly with cloth or surgical masks. As for the workers, 'Stylist A' attended to clients protected with a cloth mask and 'Stylist B' alternated the same coverage with a surgical mask. Despite methodological limitations and a lack of larger studies, their experience may prove useful at a time when, after confinement, many countries are trying to ensure that the reopening of economic activities does not translate into a second wave of the coronavirus . And personal protection measures - hand hygiene, interpersonal distance, masks - are crucial to achieve this.

As has been happening in many countries since the pandemic began to spread earlier this year , after reviewing the scientific literature , the US CDC has urged citizens to wear face masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The agency calls them "one of the most powerful weapons" to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Less convinced, however, is the President of the United States. Donald Trump assured on Monday that the use of masks is "patriotic" . But he did so after repeatedly airing his skepticism for months and when the worrying evolution of the pandemic in the western and southern part of the country seems to have forced him to rectify his position . A fact: until July 11 he did not appear in public with her. Two months after two stylists from Springfield, Missouri, had helped, probably without meaning to, adding evidence to demonstrate their effectiveness.
