The right-wing Senate voted on Sunday a government amendment to the revised budget bill for 2020, which spends € 75 million in additional funding to renew and green the fleet of police and gendarmerie vehicles.

The measure, which opens 75.3 million euros in appropriations in commitment authorizations (60.2 in payment authorizations), should allow the acquisition “from 2020 of approximately 1,150 electric vehicles, of 1,150 vehicles with petrol engines ", But also" more than 1,500 electric bikes produced in France ".

Renewal of the accelerated fleet

"This renewal corresponds to an increase of 50% of the equipment plans which were planned for 2020", welcomed the Ministry of the Interior in a press release.

"This first budgetary reinforcement which corresponds to a first tranche of the recovery plan" will allow the police and gendarmes "to exercise their missions in better conditions, and this for the benefit of a better public service for the citizens", adds T -he.

The Interior Ministry has a fleet of more than 70,000 vehicles, two thirds of which are light vehicles. More than half of it is made up of diesel vehicles.

" In the right direction "

"The department's vehicle fleet is aging and, consequently, expensive due to maintenance costs, polluting and affected by an increasing rate of vehicle immobilization", according to the explanatory memorandum to the amendment.

The general rapporteur Albéric de Montgolfier (LR) judged that the gesture of the government "undoubtedly insufficient, goes in the right direction", while Nathalie Goulet (centrist) welcomed "an investment well placed for our security forces".
