China News Service, July 15th, Song Lianchun, director of the National Climate Center, said on the 15th that there is no evidence that the record temperature in the Arctic is directly related to the heavy rain in southern my country.

China Meteorological Administration held a special press conference for the 2020 flood season on the morning of the 15th. Song Lianchun made the above statement at the meeting.

At the meeting, a reporter asked: Recently, the global climate has not been stable, especially in the Arctic, where record high temperatures have emerged one after another. From a global climate perspective, is this heavy rainfall in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River related to the record high temperatures in the Arctic? What are the characteristics of the frequency of such extreme weather? What precautions do meteorologists have?

Song Lianchun said that the assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows that global warming has led to frequent occurrence of extreme weather and climate events in some areas. Global warming does not mean that all regions are the same. The Arctic region is one of the fastest growing regions in the world. Under the background of global warming, many extreme events have occurred, such as extreme high temperature events and extreme precipitation events.

Song Lianchun pointed out that our country is a sensitive area for climate change. The number of rainy days has increased significantly, the extremeness of precipitation has increased significantly, the number of high temperature days has also increased significantly, and the number of arid regions has also increased. Such facts show that the frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate must be highly valued by us. As for the record temperature in the Arctic this year, this is a fact. Including the Siberian region of Russia, the highest temperature reached 38 degrees Celsius is also a record. But there is currently no evidence that the record temperature in the Arctic is directly related to the heavy rain in southern my country.

Song Lianchun believes that global warming will change the global atmospheric circulation situation, and affect the local climate through the interaction of the ocean and the atmosphere, land and atmosphere. We cannot say that a single extreme weather event is a direct result of climate change, but from the perspective of long-term changes, climate warming has led to an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme events. It should be noted that with the rapid economic development of our country, especially the acceleration of the urbanization process, people, finances and materials are further highly concentrated, and the risks brought by extreme weather and climate events and meteorological disasters are also increasing. The whole society should raise awareness of climate risks and enhance their ability to respond to extreme weather and climate, especially to strengthen the level of extreme weather and climate monitoring, forecasting and early warning to ensure climate safety.
