Spinach butter for low-income families for the start of the school year. Prime Minister Jean Castex announced Wednesday a revaluation of 100 euros "exceptionally" from the back-to-school allowance to support the most modest, during his general policy statement to the National Assembly.

"The back-to-school allowance will be increased in an exceptional manner as of the start of the new school year in September," he said. Matignon then clarified to AFP that this revaluation would be 100 euros.

An amplified poverty plan?

"National solidarity must continue to play at full capacity, to avoid a major social crisis and human, individual, disastrous tragedies," continued Jean Castex, adding that "the poverty plan launched by the previous government will be continued and amplified according to the evolution of the conjuncture ”.

Aimed at parents with modest incomes, the back-to-school allowance (ARS) was distributed in 2019 to 3 million families whose children, aged 6 to 18, are educated in a public or private educational establishment. Paid each year towards the end of August, the amount for the 2019/2020 school year was 368.84 euros for a child aged 6 to 10, 389.19 euros for a child aged 11 to 14 and 402 , 67 euros for a child from 15 to 18 years old.

In order to "support students, especially the most modest, who find themselves in difficulty with less access to odd jobs", the Prime Minister also announced meals in university restaurants "for one euro", against 3.30 euros currently. This measure will begin "as of the next school year," he said.
