Director Matt Reeves, who is currently working on the full-length movie Batman, will be producing the detective series on Gotham Police for the HBO Max video service. As a screenwriter and executive producer, Terence Winter, known for such films as The Wolf of Wall Street and The Soprano Clan, will join the project. The series will also be produced by Dylan Clark (“Batman”), Daniel Pipsky (“From Dusk Till Dawn”), Adam Kassan (“Black Mass”) and Rafi Kron (“Stories from the Loop”).

According to THR, the project does not yet have an official name, but some call it “Gotham Police,” because the idea resembles the comic book series of the same name published by DC Comics. In both cases, the plot is centered on police detectives.

It is known that the events of the series will unfold in the same universe as the Reeves film "Batman" with Robert Pattinson in the title role. Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon in a full-length film played by Jeffrey Wright. Whether the actors will appear in Reeves' new project is still unknown: according to THR, the casting has not yet been conducted.

As representatives of the HBO Max service noted, the project will be based on the study of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City. He is supposed to launch the new Batman universe.

“This is Batman, which most viewers have not seen before, and we are sure that fans will want to spend more time in this new universe inspired by the film,” HBO Max said.

Matt Reeves stressed that the series will allow a more detailed study of the world shown in the picture.

“This is an amazing opportunity not only to expand the vision of the world that I create in the film, but also to explore it in the depth and details that only a wide format can afford,” the director quotes THR.

Launched in the spring of 2020, HBO Max made the creation of DC-based comic series one of its top priorities. Now the service has several such projects at work. Among them - “Green Lantern”, “Dark Justice League”, “Aquaman: King of Atlantis” and others.

In addition, at least 15 DC films previously released are currently available in the HBO Max catalog: Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, etc.

The prototypes of Gotham City were New York and Chicago. The gloomy metropolis got its name from the eponymous English village, which often appears in folk tales of fools.

Once, writer Washington Irving compared a village to New York. After that, “Gotham” became one of the city’s nicknames. Later, DC Comics chose this name for a fictional metropolis.

Previously, Gotham City has appeared many times in films and TV shows. For the first time, comic book fans were able to see him in the 1943 Batman series with Lewis Wilson in the title role.

From 1989 to 1997, a series of four films dedicated to the superhero was released: Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin. The director of the first two was Tim Burton, and Joel Schumacher worked on the latter.

The location also appears in the trilogy of Christopher Nolan, a number of films of the extended DC universe, the movie "Joker" by Todd Phillips, the animated series "Harley Quinn" and many others.

In addition, the Gotham City police were already in the field of vision of filmmakers. From 2014 to 2019, the Gotham crime series was on Fox. The main character of the tape was detective James Gordon, who at the dawn of his career investigated the murder of the parents of Bruce Wayne, who became Batman.
