Bergman's TV series aired in six episodes on SVT 1973 and later became an international success. Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson played the lead roles as Marianne and Johan, a married couple of ten years whose marriage slowly collapses.

In HBO's new version, the story is similar, but instead portrayed by a contemporary American couple.

Israeli director and screenwriter Hagai Levi, known for the series The Affair In Treatment and both directs and writes screenplays. In addition to her lead roles, Michelle Williams and Oscar Isaac serve as executive producers.

Swedes Daniel Bergman, son of Ingmar, and Lars Blomgren also stand as executive producers.
