On the afternoon of July 8th, after the end of the last college entrance examination in Guangde Middle School in Anhui Province, Cheng Dongdong, a senior (19) student of the school, did not fly out of the school like other students to accept the embrace of parents.
He sat quietly in the classroom, waiting for his father to put himself in a wheelchair. At this time, his six good brothers had already helped him pack up the desks and waited in the class.
Cheng Dongdong suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly known as "gradual freezing") as a child. As he grew older, his muscles gradually atrophied, and it was very difficult to turn books. From elementary school to high school, Cheng Dongdong's students spontaneously set up a loving support group, and more than 20 students have joined them in charge of Cheng Dongdong's daily life such as morning and evening transfers, learning assistance, and inter-class activities.
In high school, another 6 classmates took over the baton. Every day after class, one student will push the wheelchair in the corner to the front of the classroom, another student will take Cheng Dongdong from the seat to the wheelchair, and the other four students will accompany him to the sun and chat on the playground.
On the afternoon of the 8th, Cheng Dongdong told the China Youth Daily and China Youth Daily that he had performed well in the college entrance examination this year and was about to go to a graduation dinner with his brother. But after going to college, everyone may not be together, and they are very unhappy.
Tens of thousands of "princess hugs" weaving classmates
In 2000, Cheng Dongdong was born in an ordinary family in Nanyang Village, Qiucun Town, Guangde City. One day in 2007, he suddenly felt that his legs became weak, and at first he could barely walk, but he fell over with a little touch, and was later diagnosed by the hospital, suffering from gradual freezing. "The head was dizzy at that time, the whole person was stunned, and the tears were crying." Cheng Dongdong's mother Liu Xiang recalled.
Since then, seeking medical attention has become the daily routine of this family. For a long time, Cheng Dongdong's condition has not improved, and his walking ability is getting worse and worse. He cannot sit down and stand up independently, and sometimes he can't even raise his arms.
"At that time, I thought my world would be gloomy from now on." In 2008, Cheng Dongdong returned to the school. What he did not expect was that the enthusiasm of his classmates surrounded him tightly.
Wang Dong, the class director of Cheng Dongdong's elementary school, said that in the second semester of the second grade, she talked about Cheng Dongdong's situation in the class. Everyone raised their hands to sign up to help him. She selected 8 male students who performed well in the class from the class and set up a loving support group, divided into a morning and evening pick-up group, a Chinese food support group and an inter-class activity group. Since then, the loving support team has become a scenic line on campus, and they have also become Cheng Dongdong's powerful "backup group".
After school in the morning, Liu Wei gave him lunch. After lunch, Xie Chenxu helped him take away the box lunch. After school in the afternoon, Du Qiang arrived at the classroom on time, took Cheng Dongdong into a wheelchair, and took him home with him on the school bus.
In 2015, Cheng Dongdong successfully admitted to Qiucun Middle School. Xie Chenxu, Liu Wei, and Liao Jiangtao, three former members of the loving support group, were also in this school.
Soon after, Cheng Dongdong's new fellow Lu Congqian also took the initiative to join this small team, and the loving support group at the junior high school stage was formally established.
Xie Chenxu will take Cheng Dongdong from the first floor to the third floor on time every week according to the schedule. At other times, several small partners took turns to hold Dongdong and put them on the wheelchair. In three years of junior high school, the loving support team sent Cheng Dongdong tens of thousands of "princess hugs".
In the summer of 2016, a heavy rain swept through Nanyang Village. That night, the members of the team worried about Cheng Dongdong and rushed to his house with a deep foot and a rain, to ensure that his house did not enter the water before leaving. "Seeing how they got wet, I was both distressed and moved." Liu Xiang said.
Six high school students took over the love baton
In 2018, Cheng Dongdong was admitted to Guangde Middle School, the most prestigious provincial demonstration high school in the region. "On the day Dong Dong was admitted, a group of leaders and class teachers from Guangde Middle School came to our house and handed the admission notice to my son." Liu Xiang recalled that at that moment, the mother and son were excited.
After entering high school, the members of the original love support group were either not in a school or were not in the same class as Cheng Dongdong, but they all missed Cheng Dongdong, often calling or visiting him at home.
Yi Shanqing, the high school class teacher who had heard about Cheng Dongdong for a long time, did his "homework" in advance. Under his organization, a brand-new loving support group was established: Lei Xiao, Tu Minxuan, Su Chuandong, Chen Zhangtao, Fang Weiyang, and Fang Yu took over the baton to take care of Cheng Dongdong.
"Gao Yi just entered school, and I was worried about the high school work pressure. Cheng Dongdong could not eat it out." Yi Shanqing recalled that he tried to give Cheng Dongdong less assignments and asked to be more relaxed, but Liu Xiang hoped that Yi Shanqing would treat her son equally. Using the same standards requires Cheng Dongdong.
Guangde Middle School also provides Cheng Dongdong with convenience in life and study. The classroom is located on the first floor, Cheng Dongdong is always in the first row, and barrier-free access is set up at the entrance of the classroom. Every morning, Liu Xiang’s electric car can be parked in front of the classroom.
Lei Xiao and Tu Minxuan have great strength. They are responsible for picking up the process from the electric car, holding it to the wheelchair, and pushing it to the seat. Chen Zhangtao is at the same table as Cheng Dongdong. He is responsible for helping with books and stationery.
"Dongdong sometimes can't open the pen cover or can't cover it, I will help; when the refill is used up, it is also for me to change it; when he reads the thick book, I will help him flatten the pages. These have become habits "Every time before class, Chen Zhangtao will get the textbooks in advance. Cheng Dongdong needs any stationery and he will hand it over.
In the class, there is a tacit understanding among the students: As long as anyone is free, he will help Cheng Dongdong.
Cheng Dongdong saw it in his eyes and remembered it in his heart. After returning home, he often consulted with his mother: "In the future, try not to trouble everyone."
"Dongdong is really sensible and very worry-free." One thing impressed Yi Shanqing: In the first year of high school, Cheng Dongdong was relatively thin, and his classmates could easily hug him. As his body developed, he gained weight. In order not to increase the trouble for his classmates and his mother, he insisted on not eating meat at home and only eating vegetables. He was afraid of gaining weight and everyone could not hold.
Every year Cheng Dongdong celebrates his birthday, his classmates will gather money to buy him a birthday cake, and give him a surprise during the evening self-study class. Each student will receive a handwritten birthday card.
Over the years, Liu Xiang treasured every greeting card as a treasure. One of them, she read it several times, and wrote: "Hey! Brother Dong, one day, you will stand at the highest place in the world and become what you want to be!"
He waived his "right" to extend the answer time
What moved Yi Shanqing was that Cheng Dongdong was never late and never asked for leave, regardless of whether it was windy or raining in high school for three years. "His homework and test papers are very neat, and he is admirable for his serious attitude, perseverance and sunshine in the examination."
"Not only did the students help Dongdong, but Dongdong's optimism and hard work also affected others." Yi Shanqing observed that although Cheng Dongdong's learning process was more difficult than others and his movements were a beat, his grades were stable in the middle of the class.
"He is also silently influencing us." Lei Xiao told reporters that Cheng Dongdong was sitting in the front row of the classroom, and as soon as his classmates looked up, he could see his back. Sometimes everyone is tired of studying, and seeing Cheng Dongdong who is still reading books seriously, he rekindled.
"It's a glorious thing to help others. I never feel boring. It takes 20 minutes a day to do a small thing and I feel very happy." What makes Lei Xiao memorable is that every time he sees Dongdong, he will always take the initiative to Smile yourself. "He is a very sunny person and will often watch us play basketball, and we will talk about the NBA together."
Donate money and materials, greet by phone, visit the door... In recent years, relevant departments and caring people have also extended a helping hand to Cheng Dongdong. The warm currents gathered by many parties, like a ray of sunlight shining into his atrium, he is therefore more positive, optimistic and confident.
Before the college entrance examination this year, the school proposed to help Cheng Dongdong apply for an extension of his college entrance examination answer time, but he gave up this "right" and did not want to trouble the school teachers. At the same time, he also wanted to fight for a breath and prove himself like other students.
Cheng Dongdong's wish is to be a scientist like Hawking. "I dream of being admitted to a university in Hefei, studying artificial intelligence, and studying new technologies in the future to reduce the burden of family and classmates taking care of themselves."
