Scientific council makes recommendations to the Nuclear Regulation Authority 8 items to enhance the effectiveness of regulations 7:46, July 7

The Science Council of Japan, which is made up of domestic scientists, has compiled eight recommendations to further enhance the effectiveness of regulations, regarding the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which inspects and reviews nuclear facilities based on regulatory standards.

The Science Council of Japan continued to make recommendations on the theme of nuclear safety after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant 9 years ago, and has recently compiled a proposal on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The Regulatory Commission is a regulatory body created after the Nuclear Safety and Security Agency, which was abolished by the nuclear accident, and has introduced a new system for unannounced inspections of nuclear power plants this spring.

Eight recommendations are made. Of these, for inspections, we request that the effectiveness of regulations be further enhanced by collecting and assessing risk information related to accidents such as equipment failure data.

It also points out that industry-government-academia communication should be promoted in order to connect to safety research and human resource development.

Professor Naoto Sekimura of the University of Tokyo, who was involved in the proposal, said, "We can make a certain evaluation of the review of inspections, etc. We want you to use this recommendation to constantly review the regulation."

The Regulatory Commission says, "Many of the proposals have already begun. We want to scrutinize the content and make improvements."
