Meat manufacturer Elivia recalled six tonnes of ground beef, sold between June 17 and 19. The company said it had discovered a defect in its production line that could have caused the presence of fine metallic filaments inside the product, a spokesperson for the management said on Wednesday.

Elivia has set up a toll-free number (0.800.945.235) but "at this stage of complaints", no consumer has called to report a problem, she said. The affected lots were distributed in Auchan, Carrefour, Aldi, Cora, E. Leclerc Casino, Système U, and Lidl supermarkets, said a spokesperson for the management of the company, number two in France for beef. cut and subsidiary of the Terrena cooperative, confirming information from Union-l'Ardennais.

These minced steaks were all made in the Vitry-le-François (Marne) factory. "The internal control of the factory revealed an anomaly": "a belt of one of the belts was found damaged", not allowing "to completely exclude the risk of the presence of a small metallic fragment" in meat, said the spokeswoman. The possible fragments could measure "two centimeters" and would be "no thicker than a hair," she added.

The company, which "immediately replaced the belt and checked all the equipment", decided to recall the products potentially concerned "as a precautionary measure". If the meats are "systematically passed through a metal detector", two scenarios are possible: either there were no filaments in the minced meat, or the wires were so small and so fine "that they were not detectable "by machines, she said.
