He joined Brittany. Cardinal Barbarin announced on Thursday at the radio of RCF Lyon that he was leaving for the diocese of Rennes as chaplain to the mother house of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Saint-Pern.

"My real vocation is to be a priest," said Archbishop Philippe Barbarin, believing that he was "very happy" and ensuring welcoming "with joy" a "return to calm after the storm". He also mentioned for the future possible missions abroad, in particular to the Middle East, entrusted by Pope Francis.

The 69-year-old prelate was sentenced in a resounding trial in 2019 for his silences over the actions of a former priest of his diocese, Bernard Preynat, himself convicted of sexual assaults on minors. But he was then released on appeal last January before resigning from his duties as archbishop in March.

The clergyman will say goodbye to the faithful of Lyon on Sunday by celebrating his last mass at Saint-Jean cathedral.
