There are two tests to break the Covid-19 transmission chains: the PCR test (photo) and the serological test (blood test). - Allili Mourad

In Germany, near Lisbon, in eastern American states… Since the beginning of the week, faced with the appearance of new Covid-19 clusters, the reconfiguration has been decreed. Proof that the new coronavirus is still around the world. Including on French soil (in Guyana in particular, where the epidemic is experiencing such a recovery that it has pushed the Minister for Overseas, Annick Girardin, to go there on Wednesday). What continue to feed your / our questions.

Huguette, from Fontenay-aux-Roses (Hauts-de-Seine), also asks us this: “Having had symptoms, I was one of the people at risk, my doctor asked to do the PCR test on May 7. Amount: 95 euros. Social Security does not reimburse and my health insurance does not take it. Is this normal? "

Here are the answers we found:

The tests. At present in France, there are two types of tests to break the chains of transmission of the virus and to control the evolution of the epidemic, points out in particular the Ministry of the Interior on its site:

  • The virological test (RT-PCR), which makes it possible to determine if a person is carrying the virus at the time of the test thanks to a sample by nasal route.
  • The serological test, which allows you to find out whether a person has developed an immune reaction after coming into contact with the virus, and which is carried out by blood sample.

As research evolves, there are different kinds, on which the High Health Authority (HAS) always decides, the last time dates back to May 18): automated tests, of the Elisa type, and rapid, of the TDR and TROD type ( if the latter returns positive, the result must be confirmed by an Elisa or TDR test). The use of self-tests is premature to date, warns the HAS: "If the taking of the sample is simple (the patient performs it alone, at home, by pricking the fingertip), it is not the same for reading and interpreting the result. "

Please note that the circulation and use of serological tests are governed by a decree from the Ministry of Solidarity and Health. They must be CE marked, have been previously assessed by the National Reference Center (CNR) for respiratory infection viruses (including the flu) and complete the specifications of the HAS, made public on April 14, 2020. Note that 'a site lists all the tests currently available on the market (147 this Thursday).

The prescription. Virological tests are prescribed by prescription for people who show symptoms of the virus or for specific audiences as part of screening campaigns (fragile people, living in medical deserts, etc.). It can be done without a prescription when people have been identified as having been in contact, with a high risk of transmission, with a person tested positive. In this case, it is the Health Insurance which is attached to them. The test must be carried out in a screening center, the list of which is updated on this site of the Ministry of Solidarity and Health.

Serological tests can be done without a prescription. But, as indicated above, they will not respond to any medical indication and their meaning will not be explained by a doctor. Thus, on its page devoted to questions and answers on serologies, the Ministry of Solidarity and Health "advises against carrying out this examination without medical support".

The cost and reimbursement. Today, the cost of the virological test is 54 euros, says the Interior. Health Insurance reimburses him at 100%. The vast majority of laboratories dispense with advance fees. But they can do it. Check this by calling the testing center. If this is the case, all the costs will be reimbursed to you on the treatment sheet.

As for serological tests, their price not being framed, they could vary from one laboratory to another, oscillating between twenty and fifty euros. However, a decree and a decree published in the Official Journal on May 28 specified the conditions for their coverage by Social Security. Since May 29, they are therefore reimbursed at 100%. However, under certain conditions: from the time when they were prescribed by prescription, for certain uses (in addition to diagnosis if a first RT-PCR test turned out to be negative, for example) and if they comply with the specifications of the HAS, CE marked and evaluated by the CNR.

In conclusion, and in response to Huguette, if she did perform a PCR test, it is not normal that she cannot be reimbursed. Having no further details in her message, we can only assume that she had to advance the costs and that she did not recover the care sheet to send to the Health Insurance. It is however possible to send the latter a complaint or refer to the mediator, by going to Ameli.fr.
