• Record: World's longest flight from New York to Sydney suspended in 20 hours due to coronavirus
  • Flights: the latest at airports: booths to disinfect people in 40 seconds and germ robots

"Ready when you are," reads the post coronavirus slogan with which Eurowings wants to attract travelers again. The problem arises when the one that is not prepared is the destination airport .

The German low cost has experienced in its own flesh an anecdote that reflects well the rapid and continuous changes that take place in this unprecedented process of European de-escalation.

It happened a few days ago, when flight EW9844 left Dusseldorf for Sardinia, 1,170 kilometers away, with its only two passengers . With such a social distance between travelers, nothing seemed to be able to cloud the resumption of their routes to Italy. And in fact, everything was going well until he reached his destination, at which point he had to turn on himself. It turns out that Olbia airport was not waiting for them, or anyone else: it was closed to commercial air traffic. A spokesman for the German airline confirmed the confusion.

Olbia airport had reopened on May 17, but that decision had been reviewed that same morning without the company having realized it. The pilots had the option of landing about 200 kilometers away, in Cagliari , south of Sardinia, but instead decided to return to Dusseldorf, as Corriere Della Sera has learned .

All Italian airports, with the exception of some like Rome and Florence, remain closed until at least June 3.

The airline explained that the situation at some European airports is "very dynamic", with information on hours of operation and closings "often changed on short notice." The unexpected European journey aboard an A320 lasted four hours and ten minutes.
