Paramount and Sega Sammy have confirmed that the movie Sonic in the Cinema will continue. According to Variety, the project is currently under development.

It is still unknown which actors are involved in the tape and when the shooting will take place. Nevertheless, several important staffing decisions have already been made. So, it’s already clear that the director of the first part, Jeff Fowler, will sit in the director’s chair. He shared plans with fans on his Twitter page.

“Blue is entering the second round,” the director wrote.

The script will again be addressed by Josh Miller and Patrick Casey. The production work will fall on the shoulders of Neil H. Moritz, Tohru Nakahara and Toby Asher. Executive producers include Tim Miller, Hajime Satomi, and Haruki Satomi.

Both experts and viewers assumed that the story of Sonic would be developed. This is hinted primarily at the two scenes after the credits of the original film. One of them shows that Sonic's main antagonist, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), has survived and is building a revenge plan (and also plans to return home). In another, another hero of the games appears - the fox Tails. He arrived on Earth through the portal and intends to meet with Sonic.

More specific forecasts appeared about a month ago. For example, box office analyst Jeff Bock was expecting the first news of the sequel at the same time as restrictions were lifted due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to Bock, the feature film Sonic in the Cinema has good potential to initiate the new franchise that Paramount needs.

At the end of April, Jeff Fowler emphasized that there were no official plans for filming sequels. At the same time, he mentioned that he would be happy to continue working with the Sonic universe, in which there are many more interesting characters.

According to the director, there is a request from the audience for new tapes. Such heroes as Shadow, Tails and Knuckles have been loved by the audience since the time of the game on the console (its first part was released in 1991).

Today there are many games in this series, including platformers, races, puzzles and products of other genres. The images of Sonic and his friends became part of pop culture. Over the years, they appeared on television screens - in the animated series "Sonic: Energy Stone" (1993 - 1994), "Sonic Boom" (2014 - 2017) and other projects.

The development of such a direction as films on computer games, Bock believes is very promising: proof of this is the success of the first part of Sonic in the Cinema. The tape raised more than $ 306.7 million with a budget of $ 85 million.

The film received a lot of positive reviews. According to the Rotten Tomatoes website, the “freshness” of the tape (that is, an overall rating by professional critics) is 64%. If we talk about the audience’s sympathies, then “Sonic in the cinema” was liked by 93% of viewers who gave ratings on the portal (more than 19 thousand confirmed ratings).

The creators of the picture had to try to satisfy the tastes of the audience. The image of the protagonist from the first trailer outraged the fans: too much Sonic was like a man. Hedgehog lost its characteristic features - more eyes and canonical body proportions.

An artistic decision that does not correspond to the established ideas about Sonic's appearance turned out to be inappropriate. Paramount listened to the fans' opinion and postponed the premiere for three months - from November 2019 to February 2020 - to redraw the main character.

"Sonic in the cinema" was among the last films that were released in theaters before the introduction of restrictions in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. On digital platforms, the release of the tape took place 46 days after the start of rental - thus, the studio reduced the traditional 90-day “window” by almost half.
