When he would have turned 61 this Wednesday, May 20, Google decided to pay tribute via the Doodle of the day to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, the Hawaiian singer author of the famous medley Over The Rainbow / What a Wonderful World . The artist died on June 26, 1997 due to health problems related to his overweight.

Today's #GoogleDoodle celebrates the 61st birthday of Native Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, whose beloved rendition of "Over the Rainbow" still brings joy around the world 🌈🎶

The video published by Google celebrates the Hawaiian singer and his music and in particular the medley which made him world famous. Moreover, the cover of this title by Judy Garland was recorded in a single take in 1988, during an improvised session. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known as “IZ”, was far from suspecting that his interpretation would go around the world.

One of the greatest ambassadors of Hawaiian music

Considered "the voice of Hawaii", the singer has released no less than 15 albums with his group Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. He has toured throughout the United States. Then, in 1993, the release of the Facing Future disc  revealed to the world its version of Over The Rainbow  ukulele. Unfortunately, he died four years later.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole remains today one of the greatest ambassadors of Hawaiian music. With his unique style and smile, he popularized the culture of the islands around the world.
