  An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in Qiaojia County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province (27.18 degrees north latitude, 103.16 degrees east longitude) at 21:47 on May 18, with a focal depth of 8 kilometers.

  At 23:00 on the 18th, the Yunnan Provincial Earthquake Administration held a press conference in Kunming, saying that as of 23 o'clock that day, the earthquake sequence occurred a total of 21 times, including 2.0 to 2.9 and 1 to 5.0 to 5.9.

  Su Youjin, director and researcher of the Yunnan Earthquake Prediction Research Center, said, "Preliminary judgment that the earthquake situation is a normal level of activity in the earthquake area, and the possibility of a larger earthquake has recently been ruled out."

  It is understood that since 1900, there have been 9 earthquakes with M≥5 magnitude within 50 km of the epicenter, including 7 earthquakes of 5.0 to 5.9 and 2 earthquakes of 6.0 to 6.9. The largest earthquake was Ludian M6.5 on August 3, 2014 earthquake.

  After the earthquake, Yunnan Earthquake Administration immediately initiated a Level 4 emergency response, and quickly dispatched the first batch of 24 fieldworkers to the disaster area to carry out on-site earthquake monitoring. Firefighters in Zhaotong City and Qiaojia County have arrived in Xiaohe Town for disaster search and rescue. More than 1,400 teachers and students from Xiaohe Middle School in Qiaojia County, located in the epicenter, evacuated safely to avoid danger.
